Paramount Global chair Shari Redstone has revealed she is undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer following a diagnosis earlier this year. She had surgery in May to remove her thyroid gland but continues radiation therapy after cancer cells were found near her vocal cords.
A spokesperson confirmed the diagnosis, adding, “While it has been a challenging period, she is maintaining all professional and philanthropic activities. Her prognosis is excellent, and she and her family are grateful.”
Redstone, 71, is currently navigating a potential merger between Paramount and Skydance Media. Although the deal was announced in July 2024, it remains pending approval from the FCC, led by Trump-appointed commissioner Brendan Carr. She is also facing legal pressure from a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump against CBS News over a 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.
According to the New York Times, Redstone sought medical advice after experiencing fatigue. She has privately shared her condition with family, friends, and David Ellison, CEO of Skydance.
Should the merger be finalized, Redstone is expected to step down from the board of the combined company.
