Tom Cruise has officially set a new Guinness World Record after completing 16 burning parachute jumps during the filming of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. The record-breaking stunts were part of the film’s high-stakes climax, where Cruise jumped from a plane multiple times—each time with his parachute set on fire.
In behind-the-scenes footage, Cruise is heard preparing for one of the jumps. “If this is twisted while it’s burning, I’m going to be spinning and burnt,” he says. “I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite in 10 seconds… We don’t take risks, obviously.”
The film, released over Memorial Day weekend, marks what has been promoted as Cruise’s final turn as Ethan Hunt. When asked at the Cannes Film Festival if he’s truly stepping away from the role, Cruise offered a vague response: “Enjoy this… everything has culminated to this moment.”
The Final Reckoning opened to a franchise-best $200 million and has now grossed $360 million worldwide. Cruise thanked fans and industry colleagues in a message following the successful launch.
“This weekend was one for the history books!” he wrote. “Thank you to every filmmaker, artist, crew member, and everyone at the studios. And most of all, THANK YOU to audiences everywhere—we love to entertain you.”
Cruise also extended his gratitude to Paramount Pictures and Skydance for their support throughout the franchise’s nearly three-decade run.
