PARIS – June 6, 2025 — Java Films has secured global sales rights to the feature documentary Cuba & Alaska, excluding co-production territories (Ukraine, France, and Belgium) and Czech Republic TV rights. The acquisition comes ahead of the film’s world premiere at Sheffield DocFest. A first-look trailer has also been released.
Directed by Yegor Troyanovsky, the documentary follows two Ukrainian combat medics, Yulia Sidorova (“Cuba”) and Olexandra (“Alaska”), as they navigate the frontlines of war. Told through raw footage captured on mobile phones and helmet-mounted GoPro cameras, the film offers an intimate and often darkly humorous portrait of life in a combat zone. It highlights the women’s resilience, mutual reliance, and the deep camaraderie that helps them endure daily dangers.
Cuba & Alaska is also set to screen at the Brussels International Film Festival, competing in the Directors’ Week section.
The documentary is a co-production between 2Brave Productions (Ukraine), Tag Film (France), and Clin d’Oeil Films (Belgium). It is produced by Olha Bregman, Christian Popp, and Hanne Phlypo.
In a statement, the producers praised Java Films’ Kathryn Bonnici and Donatien Pierda for their early support. “They understood our vision from the very beginning at CPH:Forum,” the team said. “Their passion for the story and its human message has been incredible. We’re grateful to have such committed partners to bring Cuba & Alaska to audiences worldwide.”
The film’s soundtrack, which features songs by Ukrainian artists including Serhiy Zhadan, along with an original score by Frederik van de Moortel, will be released on Spotify this Friday.
