LONDON — British singer-songwriter Jessie J has revealed she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer shortly before releasing her single No Secrets in April.
The 36-year-old artist, born Jessica Ellen Cornish, shared the news in a candid video posted on Instagram Tuesday. “Before No Secrets came out, I was diagnosed with early breast cancer,” she said. “I’m highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word early.”
Jessie J said she has been undergoing a series of medical tests since the song’s release and chose to speak publicly in an effort to be transparent with her fans. “I just wanted to be open and share it because selfishly, I do not talk about it enough,” she explained. “I’m not processing it because I’m working so hard.”
She added that sharing her experience has helped her in the past and may help others as well. “It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much — similar and worse,” she said.
With her trademark humor, the singer also mentioned a small piece of good news amid the diagnosis. “I’m getting to keep my nipples — that’s good,” she said. “It’s a weird topic and a weird situation.”
Jessie J acknowledged the timing of her diagnosis was uncanny, as it came just before the release of No Secrets, and ahead of her next single Living My Best Life. “You can’t make it up,” she said.
The Grammy-nominated artist is known for hits such as Together Till Infinity, Heaven Bound, I Want Love, and Brave. She continues to work while undergoing treatment and has expressed gratitude for the support of her fans and the power of openness in difficult times.
