ROME — Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard is set to lead the cast of Roma Elastica, the latest film by French director Bertrand Mandico. The film, a tribute to the golden age of Italian cinema, will be shot at Rome’s historic Cinecittà Studios.
Cotillard, known for her performance in La Vie en Rose and more recently The Ice Tower, will star alongside Noémie Merlant (The Innocent), Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, who recently served on the Cannes Film Festival jury, and Maurizio Lombardi (The New Pope).
The cast also features two legends of vintage Italian cinema: Ornella Muti (The Last Woman, Flash Gordon) and Franco Nero (Django).
Director Bertrand Mandico is known for his experimental and genre-blending films. His debut feature, The Wild Boys, featured actresses playing male characters and premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The film topped Cahiers du Cinéma’s list of the best films of 2018. He followed it with After Blue (Dirty Paradise), a sci-fi western with an all-female cast that screened in Locarno and Toronto. His most recent project, She Is Conann, a feminist sci-fi horror film, premiered at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2023 and also screened at Locarno.
Plot details for Roma Elastica remain under wraps, but the project is described as a homage “to some of the great masters of Italian cinema,” according to Cinecittà CEO Manuela Cacciamani.
The film is a French-Italian co-production, backed by Atelier de Production (France), Redibis Film, and Dugong Films (Italy).
