GKIDS has secured North American distribution rights to Another World, a fantasy animated feature from Hong Kong, which will premiere this week at the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival.
Screening in Annecy’s prestigious Midnight Specials section, Another World is the first Hong Kong animated feature at the festival since My Life as McDull in 2003.
The film marks the directorial debut of Tommy Ng Kai Chung and is based on the Japanese novel Sennenki by Saijo Naka. It was written and produced by Polly Yeung Po Man and co-produced by veteran filmmaker Chan Gin Kai.
The story follows Gudo, a spirit who guides souls to reincarnation, and a young girl named Yuri. Together, they face a hidden curse rooted in unresolved rage that threatens both the physical and spiritual worlds.
Erica Chon, GKIDS’ director of content, praised the film for its stunning visuals and emotional storytelling. Director Ng described his characters as deeply human, struggling with heavy truths and unresolved emotions that both threaten and empower them.
Screenwriter Yeung highlighted the film’s social message, addressing how anger spreads rapidly in today’s divided world, especially through social media. She hopes the film helps audiences transform anger into positive change.
Producer Chan noted the international and youthful nature of the creative team, which includes artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, France, and the Philippines. The team’s average age is 28, showcasing a new generation of storytellers.
Release details, including theatrical and home entertainment plans, will be announced later. The film is presented in Cantonese with subtitles; an English dub has not yet been confirmed.
The deal was negotiated by Rodney Uhler of GKIDS, Chan Gin Kai of Silver Media, and Polly Yeung of Point Five Creations.
