DreamWorks’ How to Train Your Dragon led the South Korean box office during the weekend of June 6–8. The live-action remake of the 2010 hit surpassed local favorite Hi-Five in both ticket sales and revenue.
The film earned $4 million from 540,059 admissions across 1,645 screens. It captured 35.6% of the market, according to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service. Meanwhile, Hi-Five attracted 400,746 viewers and made $2.7 million in its second week. The Korean film has now grossed $7.8 million with a total of 1.15 million admissions.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning dropped to third place, earning $1.8 million from 256,857 viewers. Since its release on May 17, the Tom Cruise-led action sequel has earned $21.7 million from over 3 million admissions.
South Korean political thriller The Pact took fourth place with $1.3 million from 183,425 admissions, raising its total gross to $2.7 million.
In fifth place was Lilo & Stitch, with $331,683 from 47,712 viewers, bringing its total to $3 million. The Korean drama Big Deal dropped to sixth, earning $255,883 for a total of $1.7 million.
Australian supernatural horror Bring Her Back debuted at seventh place, earning $195,358 from 33,225 viewers. Japanese animated film Magic Candies earned $74,448, increasing its total to $247,004.
Two other Japanese films completed the top ten: Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing added $62,545, reaching $361,064, while the re-release of Crayon Shin-chan: Crash! Scribble Kingdom and Almost Four Heroes earned $40,737, bringing its total Korean box office to $1.4 million.
Overall, the top ten films earned $10.8 million over the weekend, up from $7.6 million the previous week.
