LOS ANGELES — Jackie Chan says Rush Hour 3 suffered from having too large a budget and too much production time, calling it his least favorite film in the action-comedy trilogy.
Speaking in a recent BuzzFeed video interview ahead of the release of Karate Kid: Legends, Chan was asked to rank the Rush Hour films in order of personal preference. While initially hesitant to pick favorites, the legendary actor eventually explained his reasoning.
“The first one: little money, little time. We shot it like, ‘Go, go, go!’” Chan said. “The second one: a lot of money, a lot of time. The third one: too much money, too much time. Too much money is no good.”
Chan’s comments align with the films’ commercial and critical trajectories. The original Rush Hour (1998), made on a $35 million budget, earned $244 million worldwide and became a breakout hit. The sequel, Rush Hour 2 (2001), had a $90 million budget and grossed $347 million globally. However, Rush Hour 3 (2007), despite a $140 million budget, earned just $258 million and received weaker reviews.
The Rush Hour series, co-starring Chris Tucker, remains among the most popular in Chan’s career, with the trilogy grossing a combined $849 million worldwide.
Speculation around Rush Hour 4 has circulated since Chan revealed in 2022 that the film is in development. While New Line Cinema has not officially confirmed the project, both Chan and Tucker have expressed interest in returning.
“You’re going to see a lot of good stuff coming,” Tucker told Audacy’s V-103 at the time. “It’s going to be on a whole other level. Rush Hour 4 — that’s something I definitely will probably drop in there because I love working with Jackie.”
