Jamie Foxx will headline and produce the upcoming Netflix film “Fight for ’84.” The Olympic boxing drama was officially announced during Netflix’s upfront presentation on May 14, 2025.
Foxx will portray a coach tasked with rebuilding the U.S. Olympic boxing team after a tragic plane crash in 1980. The crash killed the entire team. The story follows their journey to the 1984 Olympics, where the U.S. won nine gold medals in boxing — the most in Olympic history.
The film is based on the real-life crash of a LOT Polish Airlines flight in March 1980. The accident claimed the lives of 14 boxers and eight staff members who were traveling to Warsaw for a competition. While Pat Nappi was the head coach of the 1976, 1980, and 1984 teams, Foxx will play a different member of the coaching staff.
Andrés Baiz, known for directing Netflix’s “Griselda,” “Narcos: Mexico,” and episodes of “The Sandman,” will make his English-language feature debut with this film. Baiz previously directed the acclaimed Colombian film “Santanás.”
The screenplay is written by Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton), John Gatins (Flight), and Andy Weiss (White Boy Rick).
Foxx continues his strong partnership with Netflix. In recent years, he starred in “Back in Action” with Cameron Diaz, as well as his 2024 stand-up special “What Had Happened Was…” Other Netflix credits include “They Cloned Tyrone” (2023), “Day Shift” (2022), and “Project Power” (2020).
The film is produced by Eric Newman for Grand Electric, Bryan Unkeless for Night Owl, and Michael W. Abbott for A Move Films Production. Andy Weiss will serve as executive producer through A WeBros Entertainment Production, along with Henry Tillman and Datari Turner.
