Nico Parker, star of the upcoming live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, is unfazed by criticism about her casting. Some fans expressed disappointment that Parker’s appearance does not match the original animated character Astrid, who has blonde hair and blue eyes.
In an interview with The Times of London, the 20-year-old British actress addressed the backlash. She acknowledged that some fans want a faithful recreation of the animated film but encouraged viewers to appreciate the new version for what it offers.
“There are people who love the animated movies and want an exact replica,” Parker said. “I hope those viewers can find something they enjoy in this version, regardless of the differences.”
She also expressed indifference toward critics who oppose change and inclusivity. “For those who hate inclusivity and change, I just don’t care,” she added. “If I valued everyone’s opinion about my hair, I would go mad.”
Parker, daughter of director Ol Parker and actress Thandiwe Newton, reflected on Hollywood’s evolving representation of mixed-race and Black actors. She noted that such representation was limited during her childhood, making recent progress “really special.”
“There’s still a long way to go, especially for women regarding new roles, original stories, and female-led projects,” she said. “But I believe things are changing, and I hope to be part of that change someday.”
The original How to Train Your Dragon, loosely based on Cressida Cowell’s 2003 children’s book, was released in 2010. The animated film earned $495 million worldwide and featured voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, and America Ferrera.
Variety’s film critic Peter Debruge praised Parker’s performance in the new film, which opens in theaters on June 13. He wrote, “Astrid was always the most self-reliant character, and in Parker’s hands, the romance between her and Hiccup feels like Clark Kent and Lois Lane, especially during their flying scenes.”
