Dakota Johnson revealed that Sandra Bullock reached out to her after she won the Razzie Award for Worst Actress earlier this year. Johnson, who received the award for her role in Madame Web, shared the moment on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast.
Johnson recalled receiving a voice note from Bullock, who had won the same Razzie in 2010 for her role in All About Steve. Bullock later won an Oscar for Best Actress for The Blind Side just days after her Razzie win.
“I got a voice note from Sandra Bullock. She said, ‘I heard you’re in the Razzie club. We should have a monthly brunch,’” Johnson explained. “I freaked out because she’s so iconic to me as a movie star.”
Madame Web, which starred Johnson as a paramedic with psychic abilities, was a box office disappointment. The film earned only $43 million domestically and received a poor 11% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also won Razzie Awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay.
Johnson recently told The Los Angeles Times that the film’s failure wasn’t her fault. “Creative decisions are made by committees, not artists,” she said. “With Madame Web, it started as one thing and turned into something else. I was just along for the ride.”
She also explained to Poehler that the final version of Madame Web was vastly different from the script she initially signed on to, noting, “It’s a crazy journey as an artist when you put your heart into something, and then it’s completely altered. But I couldn’t do anything about it.” Despite the challenges, she added, “What am I gonna do? Cry about Madame Web? No.”
