The trailer for Sirât, the latest film by Oliver Laxe, has been released ahead of its world premiere in the competition section of the Cannes Film Festival. The Match Factory is overseeing global sales for the film.
Sirât follows a father and son who journey deep into the mountains of southern Morocco to find Mar, the daughter and sister who disappeared months ago during one of the region’s wild rave parties. As they search for her among the endless electronic beats and a strange sense of freedom, they repeatedly show her photo, clinging to a fading hope. Their search takes them to a final party in the desert, where the harsh journey forces them to confront their own limits.
The cast includes Sergi López, Bruno Nuñez, Stefania Gadda, Joshua Liam Henderson, Tonin Janvier, Jade Oukid, and Richard Bellamy. The film’s screenplay was written by Santiago Fillol and Laxe, with Mauro Herce handling cinematography.
Produced as an original by Movistar Plus+, the film was created in collaboration with Filmes da Ermida, El Deseo, Uri Films, and 4A4 Productions. In Spain, Sirât will be distributed by Bteam Pictures, while French distribution is handled by Pyramide Films. A-One Films will release the film in the Baltic states, and MCF is responsible for the Balkans.
The producers include Domingo Corral, Laxe, Xavi Font, Pedro Almodóvar, Agustín Almodóvar, Esther García, Oriol Maymó, Mani Mortazavi, and Andrea Queralt. The project received support from Arte Germany.
Laxe is no stranger to Cannes, with his previous works Fire Will Come (2019), which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize, Mimosas (2016), which earned the Critics’ Week Grand Prize, and You All Are Captains (2010), which won the FIPRESCI Prize after screening in Directors’ Fortnight.
