Lucius, the indie band fronted by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, is back with their self-titled album, marking a return to a more guitar-driven, indie-rock sound. Despite their shift in instrumental style, the band’s signature harmony remains intact, continuing to captivate audiences with their unmistakable tandem singing.
Although many may still assume that Wolfe and Laessig are twins, the two vocalists have never claimed to be related. However, their on-stage identical outfits and wigs create a visual illusion that perfectly complements their harmonies, which often sound like blood relations. The pair’s collaboration began serendipitously at Berklee College of Music 20 years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.
As the band prepares to hit the road for their upcoming tour, they reflect on how their personal lives have mirrored their on-stage harmony. At the time of our conversation, both women’s babies were being looked after by family friends in Wolfe’s Northeast L.A. home, highlighting their shared life experiences beyond the music.
Their new album, Lucius, is self-produced, with Dan Molad, their bandmate and Wolfe’s ex-husband, contributing to the writing and production. While the album brings a more moody, guitar-based indie-rock vibe compared to their previous Brandi Carlile/Dave Cobb-produced album Second Nature, the core of their sound — the powerful harmonies between Wolfe and Laessig — remains unshakeable.
Each song on the album showcases the duo’s harmonious vocals, with moments where their voices come together in perfect unison, proving once again the magic they create through their unique and soul-stirring sound.
