Sony and Nintendo have announced that the live-action movie adaptation of The Legend of Zelda will be released on May 7, 2027. This moves the film from its original March 26, 2027 date.
The new release date became available after Avengers: Secret Wars shifted to December 17, 2027. Nintendo’s Zelda creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, said the delay is due to production reasons.
In a statement, Miyamoto said, “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027. It will be several weeks later than originally planned. We will use the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”
The film is directed by Wes Ball, who is known for directing The Maze Runner trilogy and last year’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Miyamoto and Avi Arad are producing the movie. So far, there is no announcement about the casting or the story.
The success of Nintendo’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, produced with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, helped accelerate plans for the Zelda film.
Wes Ball has long dreamed of directing a Legend of Zelda adaptation. In 2010, he posted online that the next big motion-capture movie, like Avatar, should be based on The Legend of Zelda. More than a decade later, he is now directing the movie. When his old tweet resurfaced, Ball shared a Back to the Future gif on his social media.
