CANNES — Elle Fanning brought a touch of pop culture to the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday, wearing a “Joachim Trier Summer” T-shirt in support of her latest film, Sentimental Value. The phrase, first coined by Charli XCX at Coachella, is now being embraced at Cannes, where the film received the competition’s longest standing ovation yet — 15 minutes — fueling speculation it could win the Palme d’Or.
Directed by Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Trier, the film stars Fanning as Rachel Kemp, a Hollywood actress who backs out of a personal project after getting caught in the emotional dynamics between a director (Stellan Skarsgård) and his daughter (Renate Reinsve).
Fanning called the role one of her most mature to date and said she’s grown more confident in choosing roles. “I go by gut instinct,” she said. “I’ve definitely walked away from projects that didn’t feel right.”
The 27-year-old actress praised Trier, saying he had been on her “bucket list” of directors. “He creates a safe, open environment. He sees things in you that you didn’t even know were there,” she said.
Trier, known for The Worst Person in the World, said the film’s emotional core reflects his and co-writer Eskil Vogt’s evolving perspective. “We used to avoid sentimentality. But now I believe tenderness is the new punk. It’s what I need right now.”
Sentimental Value continues to generate major buzz at the festival ahead of the Palme d’Or announcement.
