Los Angeles — Acclaimed filmmaker Alex Garland has officially signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of the blockbuster video game Elden Ring, with A24 and Bandai Namco producing.
Garland, best known for Ex Machina and Annihilation, will also write the screenplay for the upcoming film. The story will be based on the dark fantasy mythos crafted by legendary author George R. R. Martin, who collaborated with game director Hidetaka Miyazaki on the original game’s narrative.
The project will be produced by Peter Rice, along with DNA Films’ Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich. George R. R. Martin and Vince Gerardis are also on board as producers.
Released in 2022 by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco Entertainment, Elden Ring quickly became a global gaming phenomenon. Known for its sweeping landscapes, haunting dungeons, and immersive lore, the role-playing game has sold over 30 million units worldwide. It was the standout winner at the 2022 Game Awards, where it earned Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, and Best Role Playing Game.
Garland’s most recent film, Warfare, also with A24, further cemented his reputation for blending high-concept storytelling with intense visual style — a match that has fueled anticipation for his take on the Elden Ring universe.
The Elden Ring franchise continues to expand. A co-op spinoff titled Elden Ring: Nightreign is set to launch on May 30, allowing players to team up and tackle new challenges. Later this year, Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will be released for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, featuring the 2024 DLC Shadow of the Erdtree, four new armor sets, and expanded customization options.
A release date for the Elden Ring film has not yet been announced.
