CANNES – Rihanna made a surprise appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, walking the red carpet in the rain to support partner A$AP Rocky at the world premiere of Highest 2 Lowest, the latest film from director Spike Lee.
The singer and entrepreneur turned heads in a flowing sky-blue gown as she arrived at the Palais des Festivals. She accompanied Rocky, who stars in the film alongside Denzel Washington. Rihanna, currently pregnant with the couple’s third child, previously announced the pregnancy during this year’s Met Gala. The couple are already parents to two sons: RZA, 3, and Riot, 20 months.
In a recent Variety Cannes cover story, A$AP Rocky spoke about their high-profile relationship and parallel careers. “We both got movies coming out the same year,” he said. “I didn’t even realize that. Wow! Shout-outs to us — we’ve been working!” Rihanna is set to star as Smurfette and contribute original music for the upcoming Smurfs film.
Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, reimagined in modern-day New York. Denzel Washington plays a powerful music mogul caught in a tense kidnapping plot, while Rocky stars as Yung Felon, a hungry up-and-coming rapper willing to do anything for success.
The ensemble cast also includes Ilfenesh Hadera, Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice (in her film debut), Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Aubrey Joseph, Michael Potts, and Wendell Pierce.
Rihanna’s appearance at Cannes follows her public show of support for Rocky during his recent felony shooting trial in Los Angeles. He had faced two assault charges related to a 2021 incident near the W Hotel in Hollywood. After a three-week trial, Rocky was acquitted on all counts. He embraced Rihanna, his mother Renee Black, and sister Erika Mayers in an emotional courtroom moment.
