Josh Freese, the powerhouse drummer who officially joined Foo Fighters in May 2023, has taken to social media to deliver his promised list of “Top 10 possible reasons” he may have been fired — and it’s as self-deprecating and absurdly funny as fans hoped.
After revealing last week that he had been let go with the vague phrase “the band decided to go in a different direction,” Freese leaned into humor rather than bitterness, sharing the list with no hard feelings but plenty of snark. While the real reason remains unclear, Freese’s satirical take has sparked laughter and support from fellow musicians and fans alike.
Here are some of the highlights from Freese’s list:
- “Once whistled ‘My Hero’ nonstop for an entire week on tour.”
(If true, that would test anyone’s patience.) - “Never even once tried growing a beard.”
A serious offense in any rock band with a rugged image. - “Could only name one Fugazi song.”
A cardinal sin, considering Grohl’s D.C. punk roots. - “Told Noodles from The Offspring he could be Foo Fighters’ fourth guitarist — and meant it.”
(To which Noodles replied in the comments: “But you promised!”)
Freese’s tongue-in-cheek list mocks the cliché band breakup phrase while also underlining the confusion around his exit. The drummer, known for his incredible range and ability to play across genres — from Sting and Nine Inch Nails to Danny Elfman and 100 Gecs (on the same day at Coachella, no less) — seemed an ideal fit after the tragic loss of Taylor Hawkins.
Freese’s departure comes after less than two years with the Foos, a tenure marked by intense touring and emotional performances as the band recovered from Hawkins’ sudden death. The Foo Fighters have not issued a public comment or statement about the lineup change, and their only scheduled upcoming show is in October in Singapore.
While fans are still hoping for more clarity, Freese’s good-humored exit at least offers a laugh — and a reminder that even in rock’s most mysterious moments, a sense of humor goes a long way.
