Surveillance footage of the assault, released by CNN in May 2024 and now presented as evidence in Combs’ sex trafficking trial, shows Combs attacking Ventura in a hallway, dragging her by her hair. Federal prosecutors have cited the video as clear proof of physical abuse.
Settlement Discussions Near Completion
During cross-examination on the final day of testimony, Combs’ legal team questioned Ventura about any ongoing lawsuits. She initially responded that there were none, but later clarified that while she has not yet received the payment, she is in the final stages of reaching a settlement with InterContinental, estimated at $10 million.
Ventura emphasized that the outcome of the settlement does not affect her decision to testify against Combs. “I’m here to do the right thing. I can’t carry this anymore—the shame, the guilt,” she told the court on Thursday.
Shocking Revelation in Court
The announcement of the hotel settlement took many in the courtroom by surprise, prompting audible gasps from the overflow room. Observers questioned why prosecutors had not disclosed the information earlier during direct examination.
Combs’ lawyers argue that although the 2016 incident was “indefensible” and “dehumanizing,” it does not prove the broader charges of sex trafficking and racketeering he currently faces.
Details of the 2016 Assault
Ventura recounted that on the day of the incident, she attempted to leave one of Combs’ so-called “freak-offs”—drug-fueled sex parties—before he allowed it. As she tried to exit the hotel room, Combs followed her into the hallway and attacked her while wearing only a towel. Ventura said she left the hotel shortly after.
Security guard Israel Florez, who was on duty at the InterContinental that night, testified earlier this week. He said he witnessed the assault and asked Ventura if she wanted him to call the police. She declined, saying she just wanted to leave. Florez later filed an incident report, but under cross-examination, it was revealed that the report left out key details. He also admitted to recording the surveillance footage on his phone and showing it to other staff members—none of whom contacted authorities.
Defense Pushes Financial Motive
Combs’ legal team focused heavily on Ventura’s financial dealings, suggesting that her civil lawsuit and settlements provided motivation for her accusations. Defense attorney Anna Estevao attempted to link Ventura’s canceled 2024 tour to the $20 million she received in a previous settlement with Combs. Ventura denied the claim, saying the tour was canceled due to emotional exhaustion and her desire to be with her children.
In a tearful exchange with prosecutors, Ventura was asked whether she would give up the $20 million settlement if it meant never participating in a “freak-off.”
“If I never had to have ‘freak-offs,’ I would have agency and autonomy,” she replied through tears. “I wouldn’t have had to work so hard to get it back.”
