Chris Brown was arrested in the early hours of May 15 in Manchester in connection with an alleged bottle attack that took place in London in February 2023.
The 36-year-old singer was detained at approximately 2 a.m. at the Lowry Hotel in Greater Manchester. He was accused of assaulting music producer Abe Diaw at London’s Tape Nightclub, where he allegedly struck Diaw multiple times with a tequila bottle, then punched and kicked him while he was on the floor.
In a statement to The Guardian, a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police confirmed the arrest: “A 36-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Manchester shortly after 0200hrs on Thursday, 15 May on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. He has been taken into custody where he remains. The arrest relates to an incident at a venue in Hanover Square on 19 February 2023.”
A representative for Brown has not yet responded to Variety’s request for comment.
Brown is currently in the U.K. for his upcoming “Breezy Bowl XX” tour. The tour begins June 15 at Manchester’s Co-op Live, with additional dates in London and Glasgow. The North American leg is set to begin July 30 in Miami.
This arrest adds to a series of legal issues for Brown. Most recently, he was sued for $50 million in a July 2024 civil suit that alleged he and his entourage assaulted four concertgoers backstage in Ft. Worth, Texas. According to the suit, after one fan approached Brown to praise his performance, a confrontation ensued, allegedly leading to a group attack by Brown and several team members.
