Michael B. Jordan will be honored with the 39th American Cinematheque Award during a tribute ceremony on November 20 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
Announcing the news, American Cinematheque board chair Rick Nicita praised Jordan’s impact on the industry. “The career of Michael B. Jordan has been an unparalleled showcase for the combination of superb talent and purposeful vision that has made him a major power in today’s movie business,” he said.
Jordan rose to stardom with his acclaimed performance in Fruitvale Station. He went on to secure major roles in Black Panther and the Creed franchise. Most recently, he made his directorial debut with Creed III, which became the highest-grossing sports film opening of all time.
Nicita also highlighted Jordan’s recent work in the box office hit Sinners, a vampire thriller directed by longtime collaborator Ryan Coogler. The film has earned over $240 million domestically. Jordan plays dual roles in the movie, further showcasing his range as an actor.
Beyond acting, Jordan has become a prolific producer through his company Outlier Society. He is now set to direct, produce, and star in The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM Studios, marking his second feature as a director.
Jordan’s recognition from American Cinematheque adds to a string of recent accolades. In 2023, he was named a Time 100 honoree, received the Academy Museum Vanguard Award, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Reflecting on his achievements in a recent interview with Variety, Jordan said, “I’m not ignorant of the blessings and opportunities that I’m given. At the same time, I still feel like I have something to prove. I want to make people proud. I want to make myself proud — so I’m constantly trying to raise the bar.”
Jordan joins a prestigious list of past honorees, including Denzel Washington, Steven Spielberg, Julia Roberts, Al Pacino, Charlize Theron, and last year’s recipient, Jessica Chastain.
This week, Tom Cruise—who received the award in 1997—praised Jordan in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, calling him “the future of the movie business” and revealing, “We’re going to make a movie together.”
