Janet Jackson received the prestigious ICON Award at the 2025 American Music Awards, held on May 13 in Las Vegas. The five-time Grammy winner was celebrated for her decades-long impact on music and pop culture, as described by CBS and Dick Clark Productions, who called her “one of the most influential entertainers of the modern era.”
Before accepting the award, Jackson, 59, delivered a rare live performance, her first on TV since 2018. Dressed in loose jeans, a white tee, and a puffer jacket, she opened with her 2001 hit Someone to Call My Lover, followed by a high-energy version of All for You, complete with a dance break and guitar solo.
Actress Tasha Smith presented the award, leading into an emotional speech from Jackson.
“I am so honored. I am so grateful,” Jackson said. “I mean no disrespect, but I don’t consider myself an icon. My family and I didn’t chase fame — we chased the love of music, singing, and dancing. Fame came from hard work and dedication.”
She called her journey an “American story,” saying it was only possible because of the opportunities the country provided. Jackson thanked her team, fans, and God. “Because of you and God, I’m standing right here,” she said. “Keep God in every part of your life — that’s where He wants to be.”
The ICON Award recognizes artists with undeniable cultural and global influence. Previous recipients include Rihanna in 2013 and Lionel Richie in 2022.
Following the ceremony, Jackson resumed her Las Vegas residency, JANET JACKSON: LAS VEGAS, with six shows running from May 21 to May 31 at Resorts World.
This year’s AMAs also marked the show’s 50th anniversary and featured Jennifer Lopez as host, returning to the role for the first time since 2015. “Jennifer’s energy and presence make her the perfect host,” said Jay Penske, CEO of Dick Clark Productions.
The 2025 American Music Awards aired live on CBS and Paramount+ on May 26 from Fontainebleau Las Vegas.
