Tom Cruise bid farewell to the Mission: Impossible franchise with a spectacular premiere of The Final Reckoning at the Cannes Film Festival, receiving a five-minute standing ovation. The film wowed audiences with its high-octane practical stunts, including a jaw-dropping underwater knife fight featuring Cruise in nothing but boxer briefs.
Despite its exhausting runtime, the crowd applauded Cruise’s dedication to real, dangerous stunts that have defined the series. Director Christopher McQuarrie praised the cast’s perseverance through the pandemic and industry strikes, calling Cruise his “very own action figure.”
Cruise, emotional and grateful, reflected on his 30-year journey with the franchise and promised future collaborations with McQuarrie.
While Paramount hopes The Final Reckoning replicates the $1.46 billion success of Top Gun: Maverick, its immediate predecessor, Dead Reckoning Part One, earned a more modest $571 million. Still, Cruise’s star power and the franchise’s legacy keep box office expectations high.
The film, opening May 23, reunites series regulars like Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Vanessa Kirby, alongside new faces such as Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Nick Offerman.
