Director Eli Craig has slammed Warner Bros. CEO David Zaslav, calling him the “slayer of all cinema” for canceling a planned Tucker & Dale vs. Evil spinoff series.
In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Craig opened up about the long struggle to develop a follow-up to the 2010 cult classic, revealing that multiple attempts at a sequel or series have been thwarted. Despite the film’s modest domestic gross of $223,838, it earned $5.24 million globally, but that success hasn’t translated into further projects.
“‘Tucker & Dale 2’ has died more deaths than the college kids in the movie,” Craig said, citing numerous failed attempts at bringing the story back. “It’s always been a struggle… When we finally set everything up, it gets killed somehow.”
Craig revealed that they were on the verge of launching a TV series on TNT/TBS when Zaslav’s intervention stopped production. “David Zaslav came in and put the final nail in the coffin for ‘Tucker & Dale’ as we were about to go to series, and just cancelled all production.”
The proposed series would have followed the duo as detectives trying to solve crimes, with the humor and chaos central to their characters. Craig joked that the show would feature “Detective Tucker and Dale, stupidly trying to figure out what’s happening in a world where they’re always getting it wrong and people are dying around them.” However, with the series now cancelled, Craig acknowledged that it no longer exists.
