Actor Haley Joel Osment has been ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings following his April arrest for suspected public intoxication and drug possession in Mammoth Lakes, California.
A judge ruled on Monday, June 2, that Osment, 37, must attend three AA meetings per week for the next six months and meet with a therapist at least twice a week during that same period. The court also granted him a one-year diversion program, meaning all charges will be dismissed if he successfully meets the terms. If he fails to comply, criminal proceedings will resume.
The Sixth Sense star was arrested on April 8 on charges of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. According to PEOPLE, the Mono County District Attorney opposed the diversion request, citing Osment’s prior DUI conviction and his reported use of racial slurs during the arrest. However, the judge approved the program.
Osment addressed the incident in a public apology issued on April 17, expressing regret for the language he used while intoxicated. “I’m absolutely horrified by my behavior,” he said. “Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner.” He attributed his state of mind to recent personal struggles, including losing his home in the January Eaton Fire in Altadena, California.
“But that’s no excuse,” he continued. “I’ve let the Jewish community down and it devastates me. I don’t ask for forgiveness, but I promise to atone for my terrible mistake.”
This is not Osment’s first run-in with the law. In 2006, at age 18, he was convicted of DUI and marijuana possession after a car crash. In 2018, police responded to a verbal altercation involving Osment at an airport in Las Vegas on Super Bowl Sunday.
His next court appearance is scheduled for January 5, 2026, when the court will review his compliance with the judge’s conditions.
