Tom Cruise’s latest action film, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, topped China’s box office over the weekend from May 30 to June 1, earning RMB184.5 million ($25.6 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway.
The film’s fast-paced action scenes and widespread Imax screenings helped drive ticket sales. Imax contributed $4.9 million to the film’s total earnings, making it the highest-grossing Imax opening weekend for a Hollywood film in China this year.
Imax CEO Rich Gelfond praised the performance, saying, “We were particularly encouraged by the great Imax results in China, which bodes well for the many Hollywood tentpoles set for release there in the weeks ahead.”
In second place, the Chinese animated film Endless Journey of Love took in $7.6 million. The fantasy story, directed by Zhou Tienan and Yu Ao, is set in 1930s China. It follows a village girl, Qian Xiao, who gains the power to control time. Her new ability draws the attention of powerful forces, and she soon finds herself in danger as she uncovers secrets hidden in the city. The film features voice work from Karry Wang, Liu Xiaoyu, and Zhou Shen.
Japanese favorite Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales opened in third with $7.5 million. Directed by Teramoto Yukiyo, the movie follows Doraemon and friends as they journey into the world of paintings. Voice actors include Wasabi Mizuta, Megumi Ōhara, and Yumi Kakazu.
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch dropped to fourth place with $6.6 million in its second weekend. Its total earnings in China have now reached $17.8 million.
In fifth place, the Hong Kong action thriller Behind the Shadows debuted with $4.3 million. Directed by Jonathan Li and Choy Man-yu, the film stars Louis Koo as a private detective handling a case involving murder and infidelity. The cast also includes Liu Kuan-ting and Chrissie Chau.
Overall, the weekend box office reached $58.2 million, showing a clear rebound from earlier weeks. As of now, China’s 2025 box office total stands at $3.82 billion, a 26.6% increase compared to the same time last year.
