Leonardo DiCaprio will present Robert De Niro with an honorary Palme d’Or for lifetime achievement at the Cannes Film Festival’s opening ceremony on Tuesday, Variety has confirmed.
The two actors, who first starred together in 1993’s This Boy’s Life, recently reunited for Killers of the Flower Moon, which screened in Cannes in 2023.
De Niro, an Oscar winner for The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull, will also participate in a masterclass on Wednesday at the Palais’ Debussy theater. He is a Cannes veteran, having served as jury president in 2011, when the Palme d’Or was awarded to Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life.
Upon receiving the honor, De Niro said, “I have such close feelings for Festival de Cannes…It’s like coming home.”
Cannes praised De Niro’s “interiorized style” and his status as a cinematic legend. Over his career, De Niro has starred in acclaimed films such as Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, and 1900. His film Once Upon a Time in America was also showcased at the festival.
After the ceremony, Amélie Bonnin’s musical comedy Leave One Day will be screened.
DiCaprio’s upcoming film, One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, is expected to debut at a fall festival ahead of its September 16 release.
