The Cannes Film Festival has officially banned nudity and “excessively voluminous” clothing on its red carpet. This decision follows incidents such as a topless protestor in 2022 and Bianca Censori’s transparent dress at the Grammys earlier this year.
The festival clarified that the goal is not to regulate attire in general, but to align with French law by prohibiting full nudity on the red carpet. Additionally, the festival stated that it reserves the right to deny entry to anyone whose outfit obstructs movement or complicates seating in the screening rooms.
While it’s unclear whether elaborate outfits like Greta Gerwig’s pink Barbie dress with a medium-sized train would be banned, the festival is concerned that excessive trains could cause crowding or safety issues.
Cannes has faced ongoing criticism over its red carpet dress codes. For years, high heels were considered mandatory for women, though low heels are now acceptable. However, there have been occasional controversies, such as in 2022 when an Indigenous producer was turned away for wearing moccasins.
