Richard Linklater’s biographical film Blue Moon, centered on songwriter Lorenz Hart, will have a limited release in Los Angeles and New York on October 17, before expanding nationwide on October 24.
From Sony Pictures Classics, Blue Moon focuses on Hart’s (played by Ethan Hawke) final days in 1943, leading up to the opening night of the Broadway musical Oklahoma! Hart was part of the famous songwriting duo Rodgers and Hart.
The film is written by Robert Kaplow, author of Me and Orson Welles, and features a cast that includes Margaret Qualley (The Substance), Andrew Scott (Ripley), and Bobby Cannavale (The Irishman). Linklater, known for Boyhood, produced the film alongside Mike Blizzard (Hit Man) and John Sloss (Boyhood).
Blue Moon premiered at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, where it received mostly positive reviews. The film earned the Silver Bear award for Andrew Scott’s supporting performance. Variety’s Peter Debruge described the film as “a backstage pass for Broadway buffs” and praised it as a “sparkling introduction” for those new to the world of musical theater.
Blue Moon is produced by Detour/Renovo in association with Wild Atlantic Pictures, Under The Influence, and Cinetic Media.
Additionally, the article mentions the launch of East 89th St Productions, a new studio formed by the non-profit organization New York Road Runners. The studio aims to produce original content focused on the transformative power of running and healthier communities. Its first project is the documentary short Final Finishers, created in collaboration with Tribeca Studios, which captures the final moments of the TCS New York City Marathon.
Rob Simmelkjaer, CEO of New York Road Runners, said, “With East 89th St Productions, we aim to tell compelling stories from the starting line of every race and inspire millions to experience the power of running in their lives.”
