The Cannes Film Festival has assembled a distinguished jury for its 78th edition, which includes Hollywood stars Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia, known for her film All We Imagine as Light. The jury, composed of actors, filmmakers, and authors, also features South Korean director Hong Sangsoo, Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher, French-Moroccan writer Leïla Slimani, Congolese director and producer Dieudo Hamadi, and Mexican filmmaker Carlos Reygadas.
French actress Juliette Binoche will preside over the jury, succeeding Greta Gerwig, who awarded the Palme d’Or to Sean Baker’s Anora last year.
Strong and Kapadia both made waves at Cannes in 2023. Strong starred as Roy Cohn in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, while Kapadia’s debut feature, All We Imagine as Light, won the Grand Prize.
Berry made history as the first African-American woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball. She directed her first film, Bruised, in 2020 and has since co-produced several projects, including Never Let Go. Rohrwacher, a Cannes regular, has presented numerous films at the festival, including her own The Wonders and Happy as Lazzaro, as well as works by Matteo Garrone and Nanni Moretti.
Sangsoo, another Cannes staple, has showcased numerous films at the festival, including Woman Is the Future of Man and The Day After. Hamadi’s film Downstream to Kinshasa was presented at Cannes in 2020, while Reygadas, a past Best Director winner for Post Tenebras Lux, is currently working on his next project, Wake of Umbra.
Slimani, a celebrated author, won the 2016 Prix Goncourt for her novel Lullaby, which was adapted into a thriller in 2019.
The festival, taking place from May 13 to 24, will feature a strong Hollywood presence, with films like Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, Kristen Stewart’s The Chronology of Water, and Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, starring a star-studded cast including Benicio del Toro, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Hanks.
Winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on May 24.
