A limited series about the life and music of Madonna is in early development at Netflix, sources confirm.
The music icon is collaborating with the streaming platform and director Shawn Levy to bring the series to life. This new project is separate from the Madonna feature film previously in development at Universal Pictures, which was canceled in January 2023. Julia Garner had been attached to star as Madonna in that film, which was also set to explore her life and career.
Details about the focus of the Netflix series, including which part of Madonna’s life it will cover and who will portray the singer, have not been disclosed.
Madonna had paused work on the Universal film to focus on her global Celebration Tour, which runs from October 2023 to May 2024. Despite this, she had made it clear that she was still committed to telling her story on screen someday. She had co-written two drafts of the film’s script, working alongside Oscar-winning writer Diablo Cody and Cressida Wilson (Secretary, The Girl on the Train). Garner was cast after a competitive audition process that included other stars like Florence Pugh and Alexa Demie.
Madonna’s most recent album, Madame X (2019), topped the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 500,000 copies globally. The Celebration Tour has also been a massive success, becoming one of the fastest-selling tours ever, grossing $225.4 million from 80 shows with over 1.2 million tickets sold.
