Scarlet follows Hosoda’s 2021 hit Belle, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival and became his highest-grossing film. Hosoda is praised for exploring how virtual worlds interact with and enhance modern life, with Belle noted for its vivid, expansive depiction of a virtual universe.
Sony Pictures is co-producing and co-financing Scarlet alongside Studio CHIZU and Nippon TV. The film will be distributed globally by Sony, while Toho handles its theatrical release in Japan. This marks the first collaboration between Sony Pictures and Studio CHIZU, the animation studio co-founded by Hosoda and producer Yuichiro Saito in 2011.
Fans of Hosoda’s visionary work can expect another imaginative adventure with Scarlet, further cementing his reputation as a leading figure in animated cinema.
