Walt Disney Animation Studios is set to debut its “Whimsy & Wonder” exhibition at the 20th edition of Animayo Gran Canaria, Spain’s premier animation festival, scheduled for May 7–10, 2025, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This marks the studio’s inaugural appearance at the event, underscoring its commitment to nurturing global talent and fostering industry connections.
The “Whimsy & Wonder” exhibition is a tribute to the women who have shaped and continue to influence the world of animation. It will feature the work of Disney legends such as Mary Blair, whose iconic mid-century art style has left an indelible mark on the company’s aesthetic. Contemporary artists like Lorelay Bové, known for her contributions to films like Zootopia and Encanto, will also be highlighted. The exhibition aims to inspire the next generation of animators by showcasing the diverse talents that have defined Disney’s legacy.
In addition to the exhibition, Disney will host a series of masterclasses and workshops led by prominent female artists. Lorelay Bové will conduct a masterclass and participate in portfolio reviews, offering insights into the creative process behind some of Disney’s most beloved films. Other featured artists include Lisa Keen, Brittney Lee, Griselda Sastrawinata-Lemay, Josie Trinidad, and Fawn Veerasunthorn, each bringing their unique perspectives and expertise to the festival’s programming.
Animayo Gran Canaria, recognized as Spain’s only Oscar-qualifying animation festival, serves as a significant platform for animation, visual effects, and video game professionals. The 2025 edition will feature over 40 distinguished guests, including renowned professionals like Rémy Terreaux (Fortiche Production), Jordi Solanes (Fortiche Production), and Magdalena Rudnicka (Platige Image), among others. These experts will share their insights through masterclasses, workshops, and presentations, covering topics such as animation, character design, VFX, and leadership.
The festival also introduces an augmented reality exhibition and NFT sales related to the acclaimed 2D animated short film ‘Amanece la Noche Larga.’ All proceeds from these initiatives will support fundraising efforts for Ukrainian refugees. Additionally, Animayo will offer a scholarship program valued at €500,000 ($528,000) for online and in-person studies in Madrid and other major cities.
As Animayo celebrates its 20th anniversary, the festival continues to serve as a vital nexus for the animation industry, fostering collaboration, education, and cultural exchange on a global scale.
