Mel Brooks is set to reprise his role as Yogurt in the upcoming sequel to Spaceballs. The film, led by Josh Gad, will be released in theaters in 2027, according to Amazon MGM Studios.
Josh Greenbaum, known for Will & Harper, will direct the sequel. The script comes from Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Gad. The studio has not yet announced additional cast members. Plot details are being kept secret, but the film is described as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” reflecting Brooks’ signature humor.
Brooks, a rare EGOT winner, is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s greatest comedic filmmakers. His celebrated works include The Producers, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, History of the World: Part 1, and Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
Samit and Hernandez have written for several major projects, including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and Addams Family 2. They are also writing Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy for Disney+ and Lucasfilm.
Gad rose to fame after starring in The Book of Mormon and became a global sensation as the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen franchise. He will soon make his directorial debut with a biopic about Chris Farley, starring Paul Walter Hauser.
The film’s producers include Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody of Imagine Entertainment, along with Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum. Kevin Salter, Adam Merims, Samit, and Hernandez will serve as executive producers.
The original Spaceballs, released in 1987 by MGM, starred Bill Pullman, John Candy, Daphne Zuniga, Rick Moranis, and Brooks. The film parodied science fiction hits such as Star Wars and Alien.
