A24 has officially greenlit The Backrooms, a science-fiction horror movie directed by Kane Parsons, who at 19 years old becomes the youngest director ever signed by the studio.
The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve. While plot details remain under wraps, The Backrooms is based on Parsons’ viral YouTube horror universe, an anthology series launched in 2022 that has amassed over 190 million views. Production is slated to begin this summer.
Chernin Entertainment, part of the North Road Company, will co-finance alongside A24. Producers include Atomic Monster, Chernin Entertainment, and 21 Laps Entertainment. Notable producers are Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, James Wan, and Michael Clear. Judson Scott and Chris White are executive producers, with Alayna Glasthal overseeing production for Atomic Monster. Roberto Patino (“DMZ”) also joins as a producer.
Ejiofor, an Oscar nominee for 12 Years a Slave, recently appeared in The Life of Chuck, Venom: The Last Dance, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.
Reinsve is acclaimed for her role in Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, which earned two Oscar nominations. She previously worked with A24 on A Different Man alongside Sebastian Stan.
A24’s upcoming projects also include Celine Song’s Materialists, Eva Victor’s Sorry Baby, Ari Aster’s Western Eddington, Benny Safdie’s MMA-themed The Smashing Machine, and Josh Safdie’s ping pong comedy Marty Supreme.
