Cynthia Erivo, host of the 78th Tony Awards, kicked off the ceremony with a powerful original performance that earned her a standing ovation. Known for her stunning vocals, Erivo brought the same energy she displayed at the Oscars earlier this year to the live broadcast from Radio City Music Hall, airing on CBS and Paramount+.
Backstage, Erivo was encouraged by friends and colleagues to add flair to her opening act, with suggestions ranging from theatrical stunts to musical extravaganzas. Ultimately, she chose to make a memorable entrance in a dazzling red sequined gown, greeted by Oprah Winfrey. Together, they recreated a viral “holding space” moment Erivo had previously shared with Ariana Grande during the press tour for Wicked.
Erivo then launched into her original song, “Sometimes All You Need Is a Song,” backed by a white-clad choir delivering sweeping gospel harmonies. She celebrated Tony nominees including Audra McDonald, Cole Escola, and Sarah Snook, who recently won Leading Actress for The Picture of Dorian Gray. Erivo engaged the audience by inviting stars like Kristin Chenoweth and Adam Lambert to join her in singing.
The performance also served as a promotional highlight for Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated sequel to Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster Wicked film, set to release this Thanksgiving. The new installment continues the story of Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande).
Erivo’s opening monologue warmly welcomed viewers, declaring, “There’s no place like home, and Broadway has always been mine.” She humorously acknowledged first-time nominees like Sadie Sink and joked about George Clooney as an “up-and-comer,” drawing laughter from the audience, including Sarah Snook.
Highlighting Broadway’s resurgence, Erivo noted it was “the most financially lucrative year ever,” adding with a smile, “Broadway is officially back — provided we don’t run out of cast members from Succession,” referencing the hit show’s stars who also grace the stage.
Cynthia Erivo’s vibrant opening set an uplifting tone for the Tony Awards, blending heartfelt celebration with Broadway’s dynamic spirit.
