Blues icon Buddy Guy recently discussed his brief yet impactful role in Ryan Coogler’s horror-western film Sinners, highlighting the importance of preserving the blues genre for future generations. In the film, Guy portrays an older version of Sammie Moore (played by Miles Caton), a character inspired by blues legend Robert Johnson. This appearance underscores the film’s deep connection to the roots of Black music and its cultural significance.
Guy’s involvement in the film came after Coogler and his team visited Guy’s Chicago club to offer him the role. Initially hesitant due to his lack of acting experience, Guy was motivated by his commitment to keeping the blues alive. He expressed, “Whatever can help the blues stay alive, I’m all for it, and I will try anything.” Guy emphasized the diminishing presence of blues in mainstream media, noting the scarcity of radio stations playing the genre and the passing of many of his musical mentors. He aims to ensure that younger generations, both Black and white, are exposed to the rich history of the blues.
Beyond his film appearance, Guy continues to perform and advocate for the blues. He remains active in touring and recording, striving to inspire the next wave of musicians to appreciate and perpetuate the blues tradition.
