Who Will Be Ghostface in Scream 7?

The Scream franchise, created by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson, has long been known for its clever plots, self-aware humor, and, of course, the iconic masked killer, Ghostface. Since its debut in 1996, Scream has become a cornerstone of the slasher genre, with each installment introducing new twists, new characters, and new killers behind the Ghostface mask. But one of the biggest questions fans always ask when a new Scream movie is announced is: Who will be the next Ghostface?

As we await the release of Scream 7, the mystery of who will don the Ghostface mask is more intriguing than ever. With the success of Scream 5 (2022) and Scream 6 (2023), the franchise has continued to evolve, introducing new characters while still honoring the legacy of the original films. In this article, we will explore the likely candidates for the role of Ghostface in Scream 7, dive into the hints and clues dropped by the filmmakers, and analyze the patterns of past films to make an educated guess on who could be behind the mask this time.

The History of Ghostface: A Killer With Many Faces

Before diving into speculation about Scream 7, it’s essential to understand the tradition behind Ghostface. In the original Scream movie, Ghostface was revealed to be a duo of killers—Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard). This set the tone for the franchise, where every new installment had a new set of killers, each with their own motivations.

The killer’s identity is often one of the central mysteries of the Scream films, and the reveal is typically tied to personal connections to the main characters. The Ghostface mask itself, inspired by Edvard Munch’s The Scream, has become a symbol of horror, recognizable to both Scream fans and general moviegoers.

Scream 6 And Its Impact on The Franchise

Scream 6, released in 2023, introduced a significant shift in the franchise’s dynamic. Set in New York City, this installment featured the return of core characters like Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega), who survived the brutal attacks of Ghostface in the previous film. Scream 6 also introduced a new Ghostface, whose identity was tied to the past events of the previous films.

At the end of Scream 6, we saw the death of the latest Ghostface killers, leaving open the question of who might take on the mantle of the infamous killer in Scream 7. With the survivors from both Scream 5 and Scream 6 still around, and new characters expected to be introduced, the pool of potential Ghostfaces in the next movie is larger than ever.

Possible Candidates for Ghostface in Scream 7

While the filmmakers have yet to reveal official details about the identity of the next Ghostface, there are several likely candidates based on clues from the previous films, as well as fan theories and behind-the-scenes rumors. Let’s break down the potential suspects.

1. Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera)

One of the most talked-about theories surrounding Scream 7 is the possibility that Sam Carpenter, the protagonist from Scream 5 and Scream 6, might turn out to be the next Ghostface. Sam, the daughter of Billy Loomis, has had a complicated relationship with her father’s legacy, including a dark side that she struggles to control.

In both Scream 5 and Scream 6, Sam experiences hallucinations of her late father, suggesting that she may have inherited some of Billy’s violent tendencies. There’s also the fact that Sam has been directly involved in both Ghostface’s attacks and their aftermath, often caught in situations that could lead her to take on the mask herself. With her emotional instability and unresolved trauma, Sam could easily be a compelling candidate for the next Ghostface—someone driven by revenge or a deep-seated desire to embrace the darkness of her bloodline.

However, this theory does have its drawbacks. It would be a major shift in the franchise’s dynamic if Sam were to become Ghostface, especially since she’s been positioned as a heroine. That being said, the Scream films are known for defying expectations, and Sam’s journey could take a surprising turn in Scream 7.

2. Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega)

Another fan-favorite theory is that Tara Carpenter, Sam’s younger sister, could be the next Ghostface. Tara, portrayed by Jenna Ortega, has already proven to be a tough and resourceful character, surviving the attacks in both Scream 5 and Scream 6. In Scream 6, Tara became more of a central figure, which leaves the door open for her character to play a more significant role in the next movie.

While it may seem unlikely for Tara to become Ghostface after being a victim in the previous films, Ortega’s popularity and rising star power might lead to a twist in which Tara is revealed as a killer. Perhaps Tara harbors a deep grudge against those who have hurt her or her family, and her seemingly innocent nature could mask a darker side. If Sam were to become Ghostface, it would make sense for Tara to take on the role of the hero or vice versa. This dynamic could create a compelling sister vs. sister plotline.

3. Detective Bailey (Tony Revolori)

Detective Bailey, played by Tony Revolori, was a new addition to the Scream universe in Scream 6. As a police officer investigating the Ghostface killings, Bailey’s involvement seemed rather significant, and there was an unsettling level of familiarity with the events that had transpired. His character, while not overtly suspicious, could be hiding something, especially considering that police officers are often key players in Scream films.

In Scream 6, Bailey took a particular interest in the Carpenter sisters, and his connections to the victims could point to a deeper motive. It’s not uncommon for law enforcement figures to have hidden ties to the killers in the Scream series (such as Deputy Dewey in earlier films), and Detective Bailey could easily be revealed as a member of the new generation of Ghostfaces.

4. New Character(s) with Ties to the Past

One of the hallmark features of the Scream films is the introduction of new characters, some of whom are revealed to have personal connections to the original Ghostface killings. With Scream 7 likely to introduce new faces, the possibility of a brand-new Ghostface killer with ties to the past is high.

These new characters could be relatives or close friends of previous victims, seeking revenge for what happened in earlier films. Scream 6 introduced the concept of “copycat” killers, which could very well be explored further in Scream 7.

The filmmakers have hinted that the next movie will continue to delve into the theme of legacy, so it’s possible that the new Ghostface will be a character who feels slighted by the legacy of the original killings.

5. Returning Legacy Character: Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox)

It would be a shocking twist, but could Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), one of the franchise’s longest-running characters, be hiding her own dark secret? While Gale has always been a survivor and a journalist who uncovers the truth, she’s also had moments where she’s been reckless and self-serving. Scream 7 might throw a curveball by revealing that Gale has been operating as Ghostface, driven by her own personal demons or need for redemption.

Though it may seem unlikely, the Scream franchise has always been about subverting expectations. The reveal of a legacy character as Ghostface would add a layer of complexity to the franchise’s themes of survival and betrayal.

Conclusion

As we eagerly await more details about Scream 7, it’s clear that the question of who will be Ghostface remains one of the biggest mysteries. Whether it’s Sam or Tara Carpenter continuing the legacy of their family’s dark past, a new character with connections to the killings, or even a returning fan-favorite in a shocking twist, the next Ghostface is sure to be as unpredictable and thrilling as ever.

What makes the Scream franchise so enduring is its ability to keep audiences guessing. The filmmakers have a knack for crafting characters with hidden motivations and surprising twists, and Scream 7 will likely continue this tradition. Until the next movie hits theaters, fans will continue to speculate, theorize, and eagerly anticipate the next killer to wear the infamous Ghostface mask.
