Who Is The Football Player That Sings Country Music?

Country music and football might seem like two very different worlds, but there is an exciting crossover: some football players have embraced country music, proving they can perform just as well on the stage as they do on the field. Among these dual-talented athletes, one name stands out: Sam Hunt. He has made an incredible transition from being a college football player to becoming one of the most successful country music artists today.

Sam Hunt: From The Gridiron to The Stage

Sam Hunt’s journey from football to country music is unique and inspiring. He was born on December 8, 1984, in Cedartown, Georgia, and had a natural athletic ability from a young age. Hunt excelled in multiple sports, but football was his primary focus growing up. However, he also had a love for music, and it would eventually play a major role in his life.

Football Career

Sam Hunt was a high school football star at Cedartown High School. As the team’s quarterback, he led his school to victories and earned recognition for his skills on the field.

His athletic abilities and leadership qualities earned him a scholarship to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where he continued to shine as a quarterback. Hunt’s time in college football was not without its challenges. While he was a competent player, injuries and a fierce competition for the starting role made his college football career a tough road.

After transferring to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Hunt continued to play football, and he served as the team’s starting quarterback in 2006. He finished his college football career with impressive stats but was not considered a top prospect for the NFL. Despite his talent, Hunt’s football career was cut short when he realized that making it to the professional level wasn’t guaranteed. After briefly considering a shot in the NFL, Hunt decided to follow a different path.

A Love for Country Music

Music was always an integral part of Hunt’s life, even during his football career. In college, he learned to play the guitar and began writing songs in his spare time. His teammates and coaches often saw him strumming his guitar, and it became clear that music was more than just a hobby for him.

Hunt credits country music for being a significant influence in his life. Artists like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Kenny Chesney inspired his early work. His passion for storytelling and connecting with people through music made him realize that this was the career he wanted to pursue.

While football was his primary focus, Sam Hunt continued honing his musical skills during his downtime. He often performed at local bars and events, gaining attention for his distinctive blend of country music with pop and R&B influences. In 2008, after realizing that his future in football was uncertain, he made the life-changing decision to move to Nashville and pursue music full-time.

Sam Hunt’s Music Career Takes Off

Hunt’s transition into country music was not instantaneous, but it didn’t take long for him to make an impact. Once he arrived in Nashville, he initially found work as a songwriter. He wrote songs for some of the biggest names in country music, including Kenny Chesney’s “Come Over,” Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight,” and Keith Urban’s “Cop Car.” These songs were major hits and established Hunt as a talented songwriter with a fresh, modern approach to country music.

His success as a songwriter gave him the confidence to pursue a solo career. In 2014, Sam Hunt released his debut album, “Montevallo,” which was a massive success. The album produced multiple chart-topping singles, including “Leave the Night On,” “Take Your Time,” and “House Party.” His unique sound, which blended traditional country with pop and R&B elements, resonated with a wide audience, making him a household name in country music.

Breaking Records And Winning Awards

Sam Hunt’s rise in the country music world was meteoric. He quickly became one of the top-selling artists in the genre, breaking records with his innovative style. His single “Body Like a Back Road,” released in 2017, became a runaway hit, spending a record-breaking 34 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The song’s catchy lyrics and infectious rhythm helped it cross over to the pop charts, further expanding Hunt’s fan base.

Hunt has received numerous awards and nominations for his contributions to country music. He won New Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards in 2015 and was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammy Awards the same year. His music continues to push the boundaries of traditional country, and his success shows no signs of slowing down.

Balancing Football and Music

Although Sam Hunt’s football career did not take him to the NFL, the discipline, teamwork, and focus he developed on the field have helped him immensely in his music career.

Hunt has often spoken about the similarities between playing football and being a musician. Both require hard work, perseverance, and the ability to perform under pressure.

Hunt has also noted that his experiences as a football player have shaped his approach to songwriting. His songs often reflect themes of struggle, perseverance, and overcoming obstacles, which are all concepts he became familiar with during his time as an athlete. In interviews, he has spoken about how the lessons he learned from football have helped him stay grounded in the fast-paced world of the music industry.

Other Football Players Who Dabble in Music

While Sam Hunt is the most notable example of a football player turned country music star, he’s not the only athlete with a love for music. Several other former football players have also pursued careers in music, though none have achieved the same level of success as Hunt.

1. Terry Bradshaw

Terry Bradshaw, the legendary former NFL quarterback and Hall of Famer, has also dabbled in country music. In the 1970s, Bradshaw released a few country albums, and while his music career never reached the heights of his football fame, he showed that athletes could find success in the music world. His cover of “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” by Hank Williams was his biggest hit.

2. Kyle Turley

Another football player with a passion for music is Kyle Turley, a former NFL offensive lineman. Turley launched his own country music career after retiring from football. He formed a band called The Kyle Turley Band, which plays a mix of rock and country music. Turley’s music focuses on his personal experiences and often includes themes of overcoming adversity.

The Unique Blend of Sports And Music

Sam Hunt’s successful transition from football to country music demonstrates how passion, talent, and determination can lead to success in multiple fields. While football and music may seem like different worlds, they share common threads of discipline, dedication, and a connection with audiences. Hunt’s story proves that athletes can also be incredible musicians and that following your passion, no matter where it takes you, can lead to amazing opportunities.

Conclusion

Sam Hunt is a prime example of a football player who sings country music. His journey from the football field to the country music stage is nothing short of inspiring. Hunt’s ability to blend genres, write meaningful songs, and perform at the highest level has made him one of the most successful country music artists of the last decade. His story serves as a reminder that sometimes, the path to success isn’t a straight line—but with dedication and talent, anything is possible.
