Disney’s live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch debuted at number one in the China box office over the May 23–25 weekend, earning RMB 62.3 million (approximately $8.7 million), according to data from Artisan Gateway. The film was the standout performer during a relatively quiet weekend, delivering a rare win for a Hollywood title in a year largely driven by local productions.
After leading for three consecutive weekends, The Dumpling Queen dropped to second place with a $3 million take. Directed by Andrew Lau and starring Ma Li, the rags-to-riches drama has now grossed $53.5 million.
Financial thriller A Gilded Game held onto third position with $2.5 million. The film, produced by Universe Entertainment and featuring stars Andy Lau and Ni Ni, has accumulated $38.5 million. Its plot, centered on ambition and corporate corruption, continues to attract viewers.
In fourth place, Wanda Pictures’ comedy The Open Door earned $1 million over the weekend, bringing its total to $18.2 million.
Animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2 remained in the top five for a 17th straight weekend. The Cococartoon production brought in $900,000, raising its total to a staggering $2.14 billion. It remains the top-grossing film of 2025 in China by a significant margin.
Total box office revenue for the weekend reached $20.4 million, slightly lower than the previous week. So far, China’s 2025 box office has hit $3.76 billion, marking a 26.8% increase over the same period last year. With several high-profile domestic and international releases slated for June, the market is expected to gain momentum as summer approaches.
