Nearly two months after the Oscars, Demi Moore is still processing her loss to breakout star Mikey Madison for Best Actress. At the Time100 Summit, Moore responded to the suggestion that she “should have won,” saying, “That would be nice. But I truly believe everything in life is happening for me, not to me.”
Moore acknowledged the disappointment but framed it as an opportunity for growth. “That doesn’t mean there isn’t disappointment,” she said. “But I ask myself, ‘What is this trying to give me?’”
Despite predictions in her favor, Moore lost to Madison for her role in Anora. “Of course there’s disappointment,” Moore admitted. “But I also recognize there’s something greater I am meant to serve.”
Moore enjoyed bonding with fellow nominees, particularly Madison, who she praised for her “incredible performance.” She noted, “It’s strange to think of it as a competition in the first place.”
While she hoped an Oscar win would feel like a “completion” for her journey with The Substance, Moore now sees it as a sign that “there’s more work to be done.”
Moore also acknowledged the collective disappointment felt by her supporters, saying, “I’m sorry to everyone who had hopes for me.”
In a recent Time interview, Moore revealed she wasn’t “gutted” by her loss and even whispered to her manager, “I think it’s going to Mikey.”
Moore’s film The Substance was nominated for five Oscars and won one for makeup and hairstyling. Next, she stars in I Love Boosters alongside Keke Palmer, Naomi Ackie, and LaKeith Stanfield.
