Fans of The Last of Us have reason to celebrate as the highly anticipated second season inches closer to its premiere. In a recent interview with Deadline, Casey Bloys, the Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, shared updates about the release window for the upcoming season.
Since the first season debuted on Max, it has received widespread acclaim, boasting a 96% rating from critics and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series is based on the popular video game and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) on their journey across a post-apocalyptic America.
Release Timeline
Bloys indicated that The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to premiere in early 2025. He mentioned that the release will likely fall within the first half of the year, aligning with the Emmy Awards eligibility window. This means that at least six episodes should be released by May 31, 2025, allowing the show to compete for nominations at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The first season earned 24 Emmy nominations and won eight awards, setting high expectations for the upcoming season. Bloys expressed enthusiasm about what co-creator Craig Mazin is doing with Season 2, hinting that fans will be pleased with the new material.
Expanded Cast
The cast for Season 2 has significantly expanded to include characters from the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) storyline. Kaitlyn Dever joins as Abby, a key character in the second game. Other new cast members include Isabela Merced as Dina, Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as Isaac, and Spencer Lord as Owen. Tati Gabrielle will portray Nora, Ariela Barer will play Mel, and Danny Ramirez will take on the role of Manny.
