Chappell Roan has shared her struggles with the pressures of fame, admitting that public criticism of her personality has been difficult to handle. The singer spoke about the emotional challenges of being in the spotlight during an interview with SZA for Interview magazine.
In the conversation, Roan discussed a wide range of topics, including fairies, religion, and how she deals with backlash. When SZA asked if she cared about criticism, Roan explained that the negativity became harder to take when it shifted focus from her music to who she is as a person.
“I didn’t, until people started hating me for me and not for my art,” Roan said. “When it’s not about my art anymore, it’s like, ‘They hate me because I’m Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make.’ That’s when it changed.”
She added that people often judge her based on things taken out of context. “I didn’t realize I’d care so much,” Roan admitted. “When it comes to my art, I’m like, ‘Bitch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.’ But when it comes to me and my personality, it’s like, ‘Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?’”
Roan said that personal criticism affects her deeply. “It makes me cry,” she said. “I don’t know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.”
Over the past year, Roan has drawn attention for being outspoken. She notably called out photographers for rude behavior at public events. “I will yell at a bitch on the carpet,” she said. “I think that right now in my career, I’m just trying to see if the way I’ve been doing it is sustainable. Am I okay with the backlash of speaking my mind? That’s where I am right now.”
