T Bone Burnett made a long-awaited return to the stage at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica for a multi-night run, his first in 19 years. Known for his work as a legendary producer, Burnett’s performance in this intimate venue was a special treat for fans.
Burnett greeted the audience with humor, quoting Ronnie Hawkins and joking about becoming an influencer at 78. The relaxed atmosphere set the tone for an evening of musical magic. McCabe’s, a space Burnett fondly recalled from the 1980s, was the perfect venue for a close-knit performance.
Accompanied by a talented band featuring Colin Linden on guitar, David Mansfield on fiddle, and Dennis Crouch on bass, Burnett played through a mix of new material from The Other Side and older tracks. Highlights included “Humans From Earth” and “Annabelle Lee,” both of which benefited from the band’s fresh arrangements.
While Burnett’s earlier work leaned toward dark themes, his latest album reflects a more hopeful spirit. Songs like “Little Darling” showcased his new, optimistic direction, providing a sense of warmth and tenderness.
Burnett’s return to live performance was a resounding success. The combination of new material, exceptional musicianship, and the intimate setting made for a memorable evening. For fans, it was clear that Burnett’s passion for live music had been reignited.
