LOS ANGELES — Cineverse has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Return to Silent Hill, the latest installment in the horror film franchise based on Konami’s popular video game series. The film is set for a wide theatrical release, with a release date to be announced.
Directed by Christophe Gans, who helmed the original Silent Hill movie in 2006, Return to Silent Hill is described as a faithful adaptation of the 2001 video game Silent Hill 2. The film stars Jeremy Irvine and Hannah Emily Anderson.
The story follows James, a man grieving the loss of his great love, Mary. When he receives a mysterious letter from her, he returns to the eerie town of Silent Hill. Once there, he finds the place transformed by an unknown evil. As James searches for Mary, he encounters terrifying creatures and uncovers dark secrets that push him toward a horrifying truth.
“As we continue to grow our slate of theatrical releases, we’re thrilled to bring the next film from this billion-dollar franchise to U.S. audiences,” said Yolanda Macias, chief content officer at Cineverse. The Silent Hill films have grossed a combined $156 million globally across the first two movies.
Brandon Hill, executive director of acquisitions at Cineverse, praised Gans for once again capturing the atmosphere of the games. “Silent Hill remains one of the best video game franchises, and Gans has done a phenomenal job,” he said.
Gans also expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “Return to Silent Hill is an adaptation made out of deep respect for Konami’s masterpiece,” he said. “I hope fans will feel fulfilled by this new cinematic experience.”
Producer Victor Hadida added, “We are impressed by Cineverse’s commitment to honoring franchise IP and its fan-first approach. This film offers a visually immersive experience, and we’re excited it’s coming to theaters across the U.S.”
The film is produced by Hadida of Davis Films, Molly Hassell of Hassell Free Production, and David Wulf. The deal was negotiated by Macias and Hill for Cineverse, with CAA Media Finance representing the producers.
International sales are being handled by The Veterans, who will present the film at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
