Two years after her debut film How to Have Sex won the top prize at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, British director Molly Manning Walker will return to the festival as president of the jury.
Walker, who is also a screenwriter and cinematographer, will be joined by a diverse group of industry figures. The jury will include French-Swiss director and screenwriter Louise Courvoisier, who presented Holy Cow at last year’s Cannes; Vanja Kaludjercic, director of the International Film Festival Rotterdam; Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini; and Argentine actor Nahuel Pérez Biscayart, known for his role in BPM (Beats Per Minute). Together, the jury will award prizes to films in the Un Certain Regard section, which highlights the work of emerging filmmakers.
In a statement, Manning Walker expressed her excitement, saying, “It’s such an honor to return to Cannes as the president of the Un Certain Regard Jury. This selection will forever hold a special place in my heart. Being a part of it really changed my world. I can’t wait to discover the films at the epicenter of new cinema.”
She continued, “Now more than ever, I feel that cinema is key to bringing us together, allowing us to connect, escape, and learn about each other. I’m excited to embark on this journey with the other jury members as I know it will be one incredible adventure, escaping into the worlds of these filmmakers.”
The Un Certain Regard section will open on May 14 with Promised Sky, directed by Tunisian filmmaker Erige Sehiri.
This year’s lineup features several highly anticipated films by actors-turned-directors, including Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great, Harris Dickinson’s Urchin, and Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut The Chronology of Water. First-time director Harry Lighton will also present Pillion, a kinky romance starring Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling. The section will include 20 films, also featuring Anna Cazenave Cambet’s Love Me Tender.
