Sony Pictures Classics has secured the rights to distribute Nuremberg, a historical thriller written and directed by James Vanderbilt. The film stars Academy Award winners Rami Malek and Russell Crowe, along with Oscar nominee Michael Shannon.
Produced by Walden Media and Bluestone Entertainment, Nuremberg is set for a nationwide theatrical release on November 7. The date coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials, which prosecuted Nazi leaders after World War II.
The film is based on Jack El-Hai’s book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist. Malek plays American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley, who must assess whether Nazi prisoners are mentally fit to stand trial for war crimes. The story focuses on Kelley’s psychological battle with Hermann Göring, portrayed by Crowe.
Joining the lead trio is an ensemble cast that includes Richard E. Grant, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Mark O’Brien, Colin Hanks, Lydia Peckham, Wrenn Schmidt, Lotte Verbeek, and Andreas Pietschmann.
Vanderbilt, known for Truth (2015), expressed excitement about reuniting with Sony Pictures Classics. “I am beyond thrilled to be working again with Michael Barker, Tom Bernard, and their team. They champion great films, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner,” he said. Vanderbilt described Nuremberg as a film that examines “the fragile boundary between justice and vengeance” in the wake of atrocity. He added, “As we near this historic anniversary, the story feels more urgent than ever.”
Sony Pictures Classics praised the project in a statement, calling it “a major work” with a timely message. The studio highlighted the lead actors’ performances as “career bests.”
The project has been in development for over a decade. Mythology Entertainment acquired the rights to El-Hai’s article and book in 2011 and worked to bring the film to life.
Producers include Richard Saperstein, Bradley J. Fischer, Vanderbilt, William Sherak, and Walden Media’s Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan, and Cherilyn Hawrysh. István Major of Filmsquad and George Freeman also serve as producers. The executive producers are Jack El-Hai, Brooke Saperstein, Annie Saperstein, Beau Turpin, W. Porter Payne Jr., Paul Neinstein, and Széchenyi Funds’ Géza Deme and Tamás Hajnal.
The film is financed by Bluestone Entertainment, Walden Media, and Széchenyi Funds in Budapest. WME Independent represented the film’s worldwide rights and negotiated the deal with Sony Pictures Classics on behalf of the filmmakers.
