Criticism has emerged from former Disney designer David Hand towards the upcoming Snow White remake starring Rachel Zegler. Hand, who has strong connections to the original Disney film, openly voiced his disapproval of the project, even deeming it a “disgrace.” He accused the remake of lacking respect for the legacy of the original Disney animators.
Hand, who has familial ties to the original Snow White film, expressed his discontent with the changes made to the characters and the story in the remake. He believes that these alterations not only insult the original film but also demonstrate a lack of regard for the achievements of past Disney creatives. Hand’s views were conveyed in an interview with The Telegraph, where he criticized the modern reinterpretation.
He explained, “It’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it. […] Their thoughts are just so radical now. They change the stories. They change the thought process of the characters.” He further elaborated on his objections, stating, “They’re making up new woke things, and I’m just not into any of that. I find it quite frankly a bit insulting [what] they may have done with some of these classic films… There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.”
Having been a designer for Disney during the 1990s, Hand’s critique carries weight due to his direct involvement in the company. His father, moreover, was a director of the original Snow White film in 1937. Hand’s sentiments echo those of many who hold the classic animated masterpiece in high esteem, recognizing its pivotal impact on the animation industry and Disney’s ascent to its current dominance. He fears that a contemporary remake could potentially tarnish this valuable legacy.
Although Hand’s opinion is valid, he is not the sole individual with such reservations. Nevertheless, regardless of the quality of the upcoming Snow White remake, it should not diminish the appreciation that Disney fans hold for the original animated versions. While some of the live-action adaptations have been criticized for their lack of creativity and perceived financial motivation, they serve to emphasize the greatness of the timeless originals.
Snow White is scheduled to premiere in theaters on March 22, 2024.
