Fan Zhendong, China’s table tennis star, captured his long-awaited individual Olympic gold medal on Sunday, thrilling both his home country and global Taylor Swift enthusiasts. The 28-year-old, already a major celebrity in China, clinched the men’s singles title by defeating Sweden’s Truls Möregårdh in four gripping sets. This win added to China’s impressive record in Olympic table tennis, which includes victories in the women’s singles and mixed doubles. Since table tennis was introduced to the Olympics in 1988, China has won 35 out of 40 gold medals and 63 of 118 total medals.
In China, where table tennis is a national passion, Fan’s popularity has soared. His connection to Taylor Swift has further elevated his international profile. Fan, a dedicated Swiftie, has gained attention from Swift’s fanbase, known as Swifties, thanks to viral social media clips. Fan’s fandom, particularly his admiration for Swift, gained extra attention after a viral video from his semi-final match against French teenager Félix Lebrun. In the video, Fan is seen enjoying Swift’s song “Cruel Summer” amidst Swift’s fans. This moment resonated with Swifties, who began sharing images of Fan alongside Swift-themed posters.

Despite past controversies, Fan’s Olympic victory on Sunday was a highlight. The day also saw Félix Lebrun make history for France, winning the country’s first Olympic table tennis medal in 24 years. Lebrun, known for his distinctive playing style and impressive performances, earned bronze by defeating Brazil’s Hugo Calderano. His success, including a strong showing in doubles with his brother Alexis, has made him a celebrated figure in France.
