James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has revealed that his favorite DC Universe project is still under wraps — and for good reason. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said he chose not to announce the project early on because the concept would have been easy for other studios to copy.
“My favorite thing has not been announced at all,” Gunn said. “When I pitched to [Warner Bros. Discovery CEO] David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I included this idea, but we didn’t announce it at the time. I felt it would be too easy for another company to rip off.”
Gunn, who is preparing for the release of Superman on July 11 and wrapping up season two of Peacemaker ahead of its August debut, said he’s also developing several unannounced films and TV shows. Among these, he hinted at a project he’ll likely direct. “I always wait until I finish a script before deciding if I want to direct,” Gunn said. “But realistically, yes — I’ll probably direct it.”
In addition to films, Gunn teased an upcoming TV project he described as his favorite among all his current work. “There’s another TV show that’s my favorite thing in all of this, that is hopefully getting made soon,” he said.
Gunn also shared a story about turning down a proposal from a well-known actor who pitched an Elseworlds idea — a tale set outside the main DC continuity. Gunn told the actor the project would need to be a “masterpiece” for him to take it on. “He’s still working on it. We’ll see,” Gunn said, noting that while “masterpiece” might be a high bar, the project would need to be “really great.”
As DC Studios moves forward, several other projects are in development. These include a Lanterns HBO series, a sort-of Superman sequel, a new Wonder Woman film, and additional unannounced movies. Gunn confirmed that some of these scripts are well advanced, while others are still in early stages.
While fans await official announcements, Gunn’s comments make it clear: DC Studios has ambitious plans, with several surprises yet to come.
